When you or someone you love is diagnosed with dementia, it can be devastating for both – and for family and friends. Most people do not know where to go for support and information. Dignifying Dementia runs a fun singing group for people living with dementia and their families at The Oasis Centre.

The group is designed to provide fun for those living with dementia, singing songs that we all know. Each week, members choose songs from their songbook of over 50 songs to sing.

Dignifying Dementia designs the two-hour sessions to provide fun and companionship and engage the brain in ways that may slow dementia. At the same time, they provide a safe space where family and friends can meet and talk to others in the same position. This allows them to share experiences and learn from one another in a supportive way.

Their singing groups help those living with dementia feel less alone and more part of the community. The reduction in isolation helps to delay the onset of dementia. The initiative also helps family carers reduce their own isolation and provides contact with other family carers. Over the years, these contacts have developed into strong friendships that support families through these difficult times. They also publish a monthly newsletter with information and puzzles, and colouring pages to help keep people occupied whilst the groups are not on. They also keep families up to date with what is going on.
