The Bury Project Working With Christians Against Poverty

The Bury Project - Christians Against Poverty

The Bury Project is a Charity set up by Bury Churches Together, representing 15 churches across the town, to help relieve poverty. They work with Christians Against Poverty (CAP), a national debt counselling charity. The Bury Project was set up by Churches Together in Bury in 2019 to promote well-being for people in Bury (Greater Manchester) and its surrounding district. They have charitable status and are registered as a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation).

Their main project is the Bury CAP Debt Centre, working with Christians Against Poverty to give help (free of charge) to people in difficulty with debt. The Debt Centre Manager works with locally trained volunteers, and they receive support from many individuals and local churches. While operating under a Christian ethos, they welcome and respect clients from all backgrounds. Debt can have a crippling effect on individual well-being and family life, and it is a joy to see people overcoming their difficulties and becoming debt free.

The causes of debt are varied and can be complex. When debt gets out of control, it becomes overwhelming and seriously affects family life. It can cause anxiety, family conflict, food poverty, mental health issues, and sometimes relationship breakdown. When people are helped to get free of debt, their relief is profound.

The Bury Project offers free help to local people and works with them to help them become debt-free. They partner with CAP, a national debt counselling charity. This is how it works…

  1. Phone for Help - Phone Christians Again Poverty on 0800 328 0006 and ask for a referral to the local Debt Centre for help.

  2. Meet the local Debt Coach - The debt coach will listen to you, note your circumstances, outline what help is available, and explain what is expected of you during the process.

  3. Get a Plan of Action - Based on the information you provide, CAP will make an affordable budget plan and outline what action is recommended to get you out of debt.

  4. Work it Through to become Debt Free - The debt coach will help you work through the action plan with CAP, getting additional advice when needed, and will celebrate with you when you become debt free.
